\u2022\u00a0The order of implementation\u00a0of technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Use of technology and protecting the franchise from legal issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Determine if the costs are worth the\u00a0benefits they provide to the business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Deciding When and Which Technology to Use<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

Decisions about the implementation of technology should be\u00a0made\u00a0at\u00a0the start of the business. Failure to do this and franchisors run the risk of making\u00a0far reaching\u00a0changes that are costly and disruptive to the business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, if franchisors fail to determine the technologies that will be implemented at the start of the business, there is the possibility of incompatibility that may force an overhaul of the entire system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Boston Consulting Group did a study on the use of technology for franchises and gave\u00a0a number of\u00a0principles that should be observed.<\/span><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Your target market has already embraced technology and they may naturally expect you to\u00a0do\u00a0the same.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Early adopters often have an advantage over the competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0There is\u00a0need\u00a0for\u00a0a clear policy on the application of digital solutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Technology addresses unique challenges and therefore there is no one size fits all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Protecting the Brand and Legal Issues<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

The technological infrastructure\u00a0can facilitate business processes and make businesses more efficient. However,\u00a0it is important for franchisors to be aware of the legal implications that come with implementation of technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Franchisors face possible legal hurdles in the form of joint employer liability.\u00a0The implementation of technology should be focused on developing quality systems rather than focusing on procedures such as hiring, firing, etc.\u00a0Focusing on these procedures increases the risk of joint employer liability.<\/span><\/p>\n

The potential liability that results from the implementation of technology was seen during the court case between McDonald\u2019s and NLRB. McDonald\u2019s was exposed to joint employer liability\u00a0because of\u00a0their computerized advice over employee work hours.\u00a0The use of computerized advice created\u00a0the impression of control,\u00a0which in turn led to claims of liability.<\/span><\/p>\n

No One Size Fits all<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

No one size fits all is true for technology as it is for all business process.\u00a0The problem arises\u00a0when the franchise focuses on the digital strategy rather than on the problem that it ought to address.\u00a0There is the risk that a franchise could end up implementing a digital strategy just for the sake of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is therefore important to start with the end in mind. The implementation of digital strategy involves the use of tactics, strategies, and tools to address the unique problems that the brand\u00a0seeks to solve.\u00a0The digital strategy should be developed from this perspective.\u00a0Franchises can find the right balance by networking, and engaging technology suppliers.<\/span><\/p>\n
